Our libraries, ourselves: a new and darker chapter

Two middle-aged librarians, in the midst of the exodus from the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library last year and faced with a loss of benefits and a peppy PowerPoint presentation by a Maryland consulting firm, opted for the benefits and some time off.
Because even though, as those Singer Group consultants pointed out, “The library is like a bus with room for all employees to be on the bus, but some may choose to get off the bus,” the overriding message they got straight from the top was, “Libraries no longer need librarians.”
