I’m not sure what to make of This One. A candidate for state superintendent of schools in Okalhoma City said last week he wants thick used textbooks placed under every student’s desk so they can use them for self-defense during school shootings.
“People might think it’s kind of weird, crazy,” said Republican Bill Crozier of Union City, a teacher and former Air Force security officer. “It is a practical thing; it’s something you can do. It might be a way to deflect those bullets until police go there.”
And in case you’re wondering, He Lost
well maybe….
Just so you can see some first hand results about stopping bullets with books: linky
Which books would be best ?
After library staff read this item I was disturbed to find that the best books were starting to be claimed. The Times World Atlas was quickly snapped up by one colleague who thought it offered the best chance of all over body protection. Much as I personally love the Oxford English Dictionary, I would be willing to sacrifice a few volumes if a true emergency ever arose. Strangely enough a few staff were willing to try some ballistic tests on AACR.
Not to be an arse but…
Not to be an arse but wouldn’t thicker desktops be better? I mean drop 1/4 of steel plate or 3/4 of in inch of plywood or hardwood on top of the desks and they beat a textbook any day.
The cube in my office is at the end of the row and the row end cubes have steel bullet resistant panels in them. If office furniture companies can think of it, school desk makers certainly can.
Of course I’m all for arming all school employees who want to be armed (if you can pass a background check to be a janitor or teacher you should be good enough to carry a gun).
