NZ Home Raided for library card

Police handling of the anti-terror raids is again under fire after officers stormed the home of an Auckland businessman in search of a library card, a Hawaiian shirt, a pair of khaki shorts and a copy of the leaked terror affidavit. The man wasted no time invoking Godwin: “I’m one of probably 5000 people who have this affidavit. Are we all going to be targeted? I’m not a terrorist. This is just Nazi-ism.”

    Godwin’s law is about communications
    This has nothing to do with Godwin’s Law. Blake, your comment appears to be designed to try to stop criticism of heavy-handed, proto-authoritarianism by poisoning the well. The over reaction into screaming hysteria to the vague and ill-defined fear of terrorism is strongly nazi-like. Such actions are not at all about protection or security, they are purely about control. And such is so in this case in particular, it appears. From what was reported, I’d say that the NZ gubmint is attacking someone as a terrrorist for daring to criticize its “security” policies as regards terrorism. If anything, it is the NZ gubmint that is invoking a societal equivalent to Godwin’s Law: when a government responds to criticsim of anti-terrorism policies by criminalizing its critics as terrorists, it effectively terminates any discussion on the topic of human rights and civil liberties violations.

    In any event, this action parallels actions by the U.S. government in passing Seditious Libel laws in 1798 and again in 1917. Neither of which had anything to do with sedition or actual libel.

    There is nothing that cannot be found offensive by someone, somewhere.

    What was I thinking?! I’m so stupid!

    Thank God I have you and others here to constantly reprimand me on all my horrible mistakes. I can’t believe I stretched the meaning of a word or phrase in an attempt to be a sarcastic jackass again. Godwin’s Law is about communication, simply communication, it can not be applied to point out old, tired, warn out, hackneyed comparisons to 70 year old events. I’ll be sure to never attempt to add a single thing to a post ever again lest I offend your delicate literary, historical and political sensibilities. As a matter of fact, after reading this brilliant well thought out comment I now find people who use Nazi, Nazism, Nazi-Like, etc… fresh and original rather than boring pathetic small minded unoriginal reactionary twits like I did just minutes ago. It used to bother me that people can’t come up with relevant current comparisons for evil or authoritarianism. But now I realize maybe there’s just not enough evil in the world today and we should all keep talking about thinks that happened in the last century to refresh our memories, after all, those who don’t understand history… something something. And even better to reference laws passed hundreds of years ago. Nicely done! I never would’ve thought to reference laws passed so long ago. No doubt we’re all doomed to repeat these things unless they’re brought up here at a web site for librarians. Clearly we can only understand current events by referencing things that happened long ago we think are closely related and might repeat themselves.

    Let me also add I’m thoroughly impressed by your razor sharp understanding of events that happened on the other side of the world based on the biased ramblings of people who have something to lose.

    I look forward to your response, because I know this petty childish sarcastic rant full of grammar and spelling errors is worthy of your time, as I’m sure it will be full of the kind of helpful, constructive criticism and original political opinion we’ve all come to expect from you over the years.
