NY Libraries To Cut Hours, Services, And Staff

The Curmudgeony Librarian writes “Come January third, most Erie County libraries in New York State will cut staff and reduce hours. Particularly hard hit will be the Tonawanda and Grand Island public libraries. Service at these libraries will be reduced to the state minimum standard of 40 hours a week. In addition to the hours cut, Grand Island is expected to cut 84 positions. It is unknown if these cuts will ever be refilled. The drastic cuts are in response to a $4.5 million reduction in funding in 2005 for Grand Island. The cuts are expected to drastically impact service. Said a library director, “If a library is open four days a week, that’s a lot.”
