Jenne writes “The Blue Springs (MO) school board has rejected an effort to remove Lois Lowry’s “The Giver” from the district’s eighth-grade reading list. The board voted six to nothing to keep the book. The parents who oppose the book had gone to two committees with their concerns. Both committees decided the book should stay.
“The Giver” won the Newbery Medal for 1994.”
Expose
Actually, what The Giver is, is an expose of what kind of society ultra-conservatives would like to implement. They don’t get this, of course, because in the words of Dorothy Bryant: Censors are not known for their sensitivity to literary nuance.
