The Curmudgeony Librarian writes “Dramatist Arthur Miller, best remembered for his works “Death of a Salesman” and “The Crucible,” died Thursday February 10, 2005; he was 89.
Throughout his career Miller, wrote many powerful works, and he was considered one of the great playwrights of the 20th Century.
In the 1950’s Miller was brought before the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities to testify. He refused to “name names” despite pressure from the committee. For this refusal, Miller was cited for contempt of Congress and fined $500 and given a suspended 30-day prison sentence. This conviction was overturned when his appeal came before the Supreme Court a year later.
Miller won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Death of a Salesman. Additionally he won the Drama Critics Circle Award, the Peabody Award, the John F. Kennedy Award for Lifetime Achievement, and countless other awards.
