No More Librarians in Bellevue High Schools

The Bellevue School District has decided it can’t afford librarians in its middle and high schools anymore. At Sammamish High, that could mean an end to the school’s carefully curated manga collection.

    Only a librarian can teach this: Sandy teaches how to search for valid information, and that Google and Wikipedia don’t cut it for academic work. She’s afraid her students won’t learn that at school anymore.

    It’s not that only librarians can. It’s that only librarians DO.

    What happened to the funding
    What happened to the funding for libraries in Washington State? Or am I misremembering something?? This doesn’t make any sense, anyway.

    It’s not Washington. It’s Bellevue.
    The school district is well known for a top-down management style that generally takes away anything that isn’t on the WASL (standardized test) or anything remotely resembling teacher autonomy. They pay “okay” (bit a little better then the gang areas to the south in within Seattle proper) and are – for a school district – well funded. They have enough money in the area to feel that the parents can provide whatever little Suzie needs. Also, the parents are often “involved” enough to have absolute control in the districts over teachers according to the teachers I’ve talked to i.e. they can whine their C level child into an A. Many of the Eastside natives are the NIMBY variety of well-healed Republicans who actually believe standard tests are accurate and work. Adding to the problem (I poked around.) many of the area’s school librarians are due to retire within 5 years provided the economy improves.

    We’re not all stupid out here. Bellevue is just a shorthand joke for “land of the rich self-absorbed idiot that think they own everything” in Seattle-speak. I’m watching this situation closely, folks. I’m waiting to hear something from State Superintendent Randy Dorn or Governor Gregoire.
