Use of the Internet is growing at surprising rates, says the Nielsen/Netratings research service in a new study. In a related finding, Nielsen said adult women represent the largest single group of users — 82 percent in the 35 to 54 age group.
“In just a handful of years, online access has managed to gain the type of traction that took other media decades to achieve,â€? said Nielsen’s director of strategic analysis Kenneth Cassar in a statement. In the year between February 2003 and February 2004, home Internet use jumped nine percentage points.
In all, nearly 75 percent of Americans have home access to the Internet representing 204 million citizens. While women edged men in the 35 to 54 age group, men still represent a high 80 percent usage of the Web in that category.
Males and females were more evenly matched in the 25-34 age group among Web users with 77 percent of women using the Internet and 75.6 percent of men on the Web.

This report dose not square with others available on the Net, including the December report from the good folks at the Pew Charitable Trust. According to their findings, less than 70% of the American population use the Internet from anywhere. Other reports indicate that the number of people using from home is less than 60% and maybe less than 50%. I know PCs have gotten cheaper, but just a couple of years ago, the penetration of home PCs was less than 60% of the population and Internet use was less than 50%. So check other sources before believing 75% of our fellow citizens have net access at home.
