We sneaked a peak back in April, but today was opening day of the long awaited Minneapolis Central Library.
The five-story, 365,000 square-foot building designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli holds more than 3 million books and other reference materials. Among other accoutrements, there are fireplaces on each of the five floors and plenty of places to curl up with a book. Slide show and descriptions of the opening day here and here.
Three things librarians do
I clicked on the link to the previous story about the library. There is a mention in the article about self-service features that will allow librarians to be freed up from what they normally do. What does the article say that we normally do?
1) sitting behind a desk
2) processing books
3) preserving silence
Ever wonder why wages are so low. Because you don’t get paid much for doing the three things listed above. That is what the public thinks we do.
