New library concept – for more democracy

Anders Ericson writes “This new library service concept “The Library Takes Up The Case” (LTC) puts the library right in the middle of local issues and debates. By means of simple – or more complex – topic web pages with links, downloads, virtual reference and other services the library gives added value to the shallow coverage of many newspapers and the often biased information of local authority web sites. LTC makes the Independant Public Library come true.”

    I’m getting a little tired of the premise that librarians are going to approach issues with any less bias then anybody else or that somehow we are going to offer deeper insights into issues. Its ridiculous to think that a profession that can’t even explain its own basic functions effectively to the public (or can’t even agree on them amongst ourselves) can somehow see itself as a higher class of individuals than the rest of the human population.

    I’m all for libraries ‘taking over town hall’. We should offer access to any and all local government documents and be able to assist people in finding information on local issues but to try and create content on top of what already exists is a waste of time and energy.
