Fresno State News reports that Michael Gorman will be doing more than picking on bloggers, laughing at the PATRIOT ACT and dismissing technology over the next year.
Last week’s Lehrer News Hour was first – but won’t be the last – media spotlight on Gorman. He also has met with journalists and editors of Governing magazine, the McClatchy Group of newspapers, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, USA Today and Cox newspapers to discuss, among other things, the USA Patriot Act, reading and literacy, the library as space, and digitization projects.
They say as president he’s very concerned about the situation of school libraries. Another priority is improving librarian education, specifically “whether there will be an adequate supply of new librarians to replace those of my generation as we retire.”
Note To Boomers: The world will continue to spin when you’re gone. We’ll miss your stories about Woodstock, J.F.K., and what it was like when you went to library school, but we’ll somehow manage to keep those libraries open without you.

Not every “Boomer” deserves to be dismissed with such scorn. There are plenty of librarians over 40 who embrace technology, who creatively and enthusiastically pursue their calling. Don’t let your dislike of Gorman blind you to the merits of an entire generation of people. It’s as foolish as when over-40’s assuming that everyone under 30 is a naiive idiot with multiple body-piercings and a cell phone permanently clamped to one ear.

I don’t really dismiss every boomer with such scorn, just the generation in general.
That being said, I’m just tired of hearing people say when the boomers retire the world will end, or at least libraries will be short of people. Boomers seem to have generational blindness, “Boomer Blindness,” where they only see themselves, and usually then in the 1960’s. I’m just bitter, don’t listen to me.
And I don’t dislike Gorman, I’ve never even met him. I don’t like somethings I’ve read from him lately, that’s about it.
And everyone under 30 does have a cellphone clamped to one ear, actually that probably more like under 50 these days.

It’s silly to lump together everyone born in the 1946-1964 period as though they shared a common viewpoint. The cultural and economic experiences of the oldest boomers are very different from those of the youngest cohort.

You’d better not mofo! I’m watching you! Even though I’m all youthful(tip: fat hides wrinkles) and unbearably hip (despite lack of body modfications), and all that crap, I’m a boomer. But, a little extra snarkiness is okay, and sometimes necessary, from time to time.

Blake — You should know better than to lump us all in together that way! Who created the technology that the younger generations are using? Who created the Internet and the WWW? I may be a boomer but I am also up on the latest technology.
