I’m putting together a list of the top “must read” library blogs, but I don’t want this to be just my list. I want the list to reflect as wide a range of opinions as possible.
What blogs do you read every day? What blogs help you learn? What blogs keep you informed? What blogs make you laugh? Who’s the best writer out there? As one person put it: “I read many others, but these are the LIS blogs that get read even when time is short.” Send me your list, or leave a comment below.
Your list need not be complete, fair, or even have more than one blog listed. I’m looking for a few names from everyone so the final list is a good reflection of what many people think about our little online world.
Note: We all know LISNews is obviously the single most important web site in the entire history of the internet, so therefore I won’t be including it on any final list.
My Regular Library-Related Blog Readings
This is only a tiny fraction of the blogs and RSS feeds I browse. If I have to narrow it down, here it goes:
Kept-Up Academic Librarian
Tame the Web: Libraries and Technology
Library Stuff
Free Range Librarian
Information Literacy Weblog
Confessions of a Science Librarian
On Christina’s Radar
Science Library Pad
scitech library question
Must-read blog for scholars: Open Access News
For the latest on free online access to peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly journal literature.
Very high signal to noise ratio – each entry just a summary and link to exciting new initiatives. Expertly edited by Peter Suber and his board of carefully selected editors. Supported in part by the Open Society Institute (OSI), Public Knowledge (PK), and the Association of Research Libraries (ARC) influential Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).
Also worth mentioning: Peter Suber’s monthly newsletter is much more than a mere compilation of the daily blog entries – it is a superb summary of the latest developments in the rapidly developing movement towards sustainable Open Access scientific and scholarly literature. Suber’s extensively hyperlinked summaries and finely-honed arguments (he is a philosopher who can write quite well) are a great tool for Open Access advocates and researchers. Definitely worthwhile – one meaty email a month keeps you on top of the field, while giving you a local archive of great hyperlinks.

Library Dust. Wonderful writing. The only library blog that qualifies as literature. A cult has formed around it at my library school.

I think I pretty much read or keep up with just about what everyone else does. I think by now people know where to go, but here is some of my list:
QuickLibrarianSetUp
These are the blogs that I used to populate a dummy account on Bloglines to make it easy for librarians to get started with RSS (see Bloglines for Librarians in Three (and a half) Easy Steps).
If I were re-doing it today, I’d probably take out TechnoBiblio which hasn’t been that vigorous lately and add Tame the Web and Library clips.
My must read list
Though there are many fine weblogs in my Bloglines account, the top nine I read when I have only a small amount of time are the following—not in any specific order. Most of these are naturally tied with my own interests—technical services and technology.
