MU libraries’ books bound for Louisiana

Libraries at the University of Missouri-Columbia have pitched in to help restore the collection of a Katrina-damaged library on the campus of Southern University in New Orleans. MU librarians, volunteers and graduate students are combing through donated books and obsolete volumes to determine whether any can be shipped to Southern’s Leonard Washington Memorial Library.

Hurricane Katrina devastated the library and left 6 feet of floodwater in its first floor for three weeks.

Southern University Library Director Mary Penny said yesterday that she and her staff have not been able to get into the building. She said everything on the first floor needs to be replaced.
