More security woes for Desktop Search Tools

Durst writes “This one from Federal Computer Week describes more of the dangers enterprises face when allowing users to download free desktop search tools. No company is immune to the criticism: Google, MSN, and Yahoo! all get berated for not meeting federal information security guidelines.”

    Anyway of course it’s a danger but then doesn’t that mean that the onus should be on making their systems secure rather than taking away the benefits of a search system? Are they really saying lets stay with the slow and inaccurate Windows search just in case our security is breached?

    I don’t think any agency is advocating slow search or no search. Google has stated they are working on an enterprise search system that should effectively counter the current security holes most system administrators and information assurance managers worry about.

    While the article doesn’t come right out and say it, I think it all comes down to control issues. Control of a network, controlling access, and controlling users. That’s just my opinion. If individual users start downloading software that could open their agency to security threats…

    The onus of security is on the individual agencies. Thus if a tool doesn’t fit the mold, but the vendor wants to do business with Uncle Sam, the vendor must devise a way to make the tool work to Uncle’s standards. Some will make the effort and others won’t.
