NY Times (free subscription required) gives some figures on the spiraling salaries of university presidents. The earnings of many top university presidents are close to $1 million a year, according to an annual survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education, rising far more quickly than faculty salaries.
Forty-two presidents of private universities were paid $500,000 or more in the 2003 fiscal year, the most recent for which figures are available, compared with 27 presidents the previous year. Just two earned half a million in 1994.”

I just love AP articles.
Why are we surprised to see….
… the corporate model being applied to higher education. Just because “we need to run it like a bidness”, do we have to go with the obscene salary discrepancy, too?
Re:Why are we surprised to see….
One advantage of having the director earn 3 times my salary was that I felt no guilt in referring any complaints about library policy to him. I figured that’s why they paid him the big bucks. I wasn’t paid enough to deal with those headaches.
Re:Why are we surprised to see….
Yup. I totally agree on that one. I often pass things up the chain of command b/c I feel like a decision is “above my pay grade”.
