More on GA Potential Book Removal

Here’s more of the story posted earlier this week about a group, Crusaders for Christ, who want a whole slew of classic texts pulled from Barstow County (GA) Schools shelves. Group spokesman, the Rev. Dwight Holcomb, warned school board members, “You’re going to have to answer to God Almighty for your decision.” Titles include ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ‘Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,’ ‘The Martian Chronicles,’ and ‘Farenheit 451.’ More in this editorial from the Huntsville Times.

    Answering to God Almighty

    Somehow, and my religious knowledge is definitely finite, I think that God has more important things to concern him/herself with than who The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird offends. There’s all that rape and killing and blasphemy that goes on in real life, for instance. Perhaps we should concentrate more on cleaning that stuff up rather than damning each other over something that happens in the pages of a book.

    GA Potential Book Removal
    “To Kill A Mockingbird” is one of the titles provided in the NEH’s “We the People Bookshelf” to cover the subject of courage.
    My school is among 31 libraries in Georgia to receive the titles from this grant; I joyfully received and opened the box of books today. Please note that the Bartow County Public Library is among the recepients of the “We the People Bookshelf.”
