    Another story
The story is also at a local NBC website. Article here.

    Video
The story is also here. What is interesting about this version is that it is by the news channel in Florida where the artist lives. There is a one minute video clip with clips of the mural and comments by the artist.

    Pompous ass!
God damned artsy-fartsy types. Even I have a hard time granting idiots like that any credibility.

It appears to me that this twit is a lazy slob who did bad work and then got all defense about the second-rate product and refused to accept responsibility for her own incompetence; trying to con an extra six grand out of the council. I will grant, however, that she is probably correct to not return there in light of the hate mail, although that was probably in response to her attempted rip-off.

    Basely idiotic

Okay, speaking as a librarian who also happens to be an artist, I gotta few things to say about this putz.

First off, I need to state that I don’t work in her medium. I work almost entirely in digital, though I have done paint and graphite. Nevertheless, several things probably transpired that should’ve led to a legal injunction against the artist, not a US$6,000 bonus.

In most cases with commission work, the artist meets several times with the client. They get a feel for what the client needs and wants and how they want it to look. Rough sketches are made and these turn into better quality sketches which turn into final concepts for the finished work. Throughout all of this the artist and the client should remain in close contact so that, when the work is actually started and completed, there are few surprises as to how it looks.

I believe that this is probably what took place, or something very close to it. This is just simply the way it’s done in commercial art and commission work. Now I really don’t want to believe that the library authorized the misspelled names as part of the overall work. And from the staggering outcry, I think my belief is well justified.

What does this mean? It means the artist either lied, or held something back, from her client. That’s unprofessional, irresponsible, incompetent, and just plain damn wrong. Depending on the contract, I wouldn’t be looking for a $6,000 fee to have the artist fix it, I’d be looking for a lawyer to make the artist fix it as per the original agreement.

    BS
I assume from reading several of the articles on this nonsense that the library received a proof or conceptual illustration of what was going to be done.

If the library approved it without telling the artist to correct the spelling errors then the library got what it deserved.

On the other hand if the artist was told to spell things correctly and then put up the crap she did she should repair her work without cost to the library that commissioned it.

The suggestion that she did it that way on purpose for artistic reasons is simply BS.

I have half a case of tile left over from doing a bathroom; I’ll happily fix it for the price of a plane ticket to LA.

I bet the library could raise more than 40K by selling hammer blows for $1 each to remove the monstrosity this idiot created.

    Creative fund raising!
