From BBC News:
Adolf Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf, has become a bestseller in Turkey – sparking fears of growing anti-Semitic feelings in the country.
Germany has banned the book, along with materials expousing Holocaust denial. What should librarians do with such items?
What should librarians do with such items?
Catalog them and add them to the collection.
I would personally also make sure that the alternate viewpoint was repersented in the collection as well.
But is that not what we should do anyway?
Re:What should librarians do with such items?
+1 obvious
I hope that is what is done but you never know these days.
Re:What should librarians do with such items?
The problem I have is with the phrase “such items”. Mein Whatever is a significant piece of history. If David Duke suddenly comes out with a follow-up piece spouting white-supremist nonsense I think it should not be purchased to begin with.
Re:What should librarians do with such items?
I have to agree with that. However if Duke were to become president of some rogue nation and then go down in flames then I might add his book.
Whacko is whacko, historical whacko is historical.
Re:What should librarians do with such items?
I don’t. When some whacko puts his bankrupt, petty little hatreds down in writing it makes it easier for the rest of us to show just how bankrupt and petty they are. And then when others of his ilk crawl out of woodwork to shower dung and derision in all directions because we don’t blindly fall for his ideology, they identify themselves so we can know who they are.
