    They could have done it.
    In the article was this comment: “A major author once suggested to his publisher that $1 million of his next advance be split among 10 young authors to make their first-book dreams come true. Did the publisher agree? Doubt it.”

    The major author if they wanted to do this did not need the help of the publisher. If they wanted to divide a million dollars among new authors they could have easily done so. They don’t need permission from a publisher to do it.
