Mass. official aims to shame library porn viewers
A city councilor in Massachusetts thinks he’s come up with a way to stop people looking at pornography on public library computers — name them and shame them.
Quincy Councilor Daniel Raymondi has asked Mayor Thomas Koch to make public a list of people who have viewed pornography on library computers within the past year. The council unanimously approved a resolution on the idea last week.
why not just implement a web
why not just implement a web filtering system? i smell some serious lawsuits coming on.

Hey Mr. Raymondi, how about just shutting down the libraries?!
That way nobody will see p*rn in your community and Quincy can save all that money.

okay, just the idea that they have a list is trouble..
so they already have a list of names? oh, it’s for “third-strikers” who have been banned from the library already… ah, probably not a problem to publicize the names of people banned from the library… it’s a government facility, so it might be in the public interest to alert the public… so if this is the “short list” of banned individuals, then it might be okay.. but the full list of everyone who has ever looked at porn..? that seems extreme.

You notice they did not put in “city employees” or elected officials who use government computers. If they added those people, the list really would be a long one!
The hypocrisy of porn busters is well known. Daniel Raymondi should take an oath in public he has never viewed porn, and never had sex outside of marriage, and has never done anything wrong.
Then he can throw stones.

Publicizing patron’s library use
There was apparently a time (in 1951) when library directors were encouraged to publish lists of persons who had checked out books on Communism. The ALA fought against publicizing library patrons’ circulation information.
Where I work- It’s none of my business what patron’s look at or learn from on the public use computers.
There has also been a problem with disreputable persons using library computers with other people’s library card numbers.
Possible example: a disreputable person signs onto Internet by typing in the number of Mayor Thomas Koch’s library card, then directs the computer to Internet Porn sites. The following week Mayor Thomas Koch is publicly announced to be the most avid viewer of porn in the public library system.
