Martin Luther King Jr. Papers To Be Auctioned

At the end of this month, Sotheby’s will auction off the personal papers of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., written between 1946 and 1968. This includes 7,000 handwritten items one of which is the text of his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

The estate hopes of course that the Smithsonian Institution or the Library of Congress will bid on the collection. Auctioneer David Redden, Sotheby’s vice chairman, commented, “If our institutions can’t afford it, then something is intensely wrong.”
