Marin Cty. to Close One of Eleven Branch Libraries

The costs of having eleven branches in the Marin County Library System has forced a decision to close down the San Geronimo Valley Library, the most expensive to maintain.

Despite protests from a handful of residents, county officials agreed Tuesday to shut down the 80-year-old San Geronimo Valley Library operation, saying it will close by July as its services are merged with the Fairfax Library. “This is such a sad thing,” said Supervisor Charles McGlashan. “I’m broken-hearted by this.”

The economics are such that “”Every time someone walks in the door, it costs $21 and every time they check out a book, it costs us $29,” says County Librarian Gail Haar. Marin (CA) Independent Journal.
