Managing flood of White House records will tax NARA

The National Archives and Records Administration has established a workable plan to develop an information system to preserve electronic records, but the agency should consider a way to manage the possibility that it will not be able to process records from the Bush administration in time for the January 2009 transition, according to a Government Accountability Office report released on Friday.

    Nixon had it good.
    All Nixon had to worry about were some tapes. Now, Presidents have thousands or tens of thousands (or more) of electronic documents that could be archived or requested through the FOIA. For Bush, we need to search for “oil” or “Iraq” or even “Iran.” For Clinton, one might search for references to “stain removal.” Why would anyone want to be President these days. The NARA should limit each new President to one 500GB external hard drive. Once you exceed that limit, the future won’t remember.
