An Akron Beacon Journal Article points out there are some people so aggrieved with some books that they demand librarians take the book off the shelf. Books as diverse as the Frog Prince fairy tale, Catcher in the Rye and the dictionary have raised the ire of unhappy patrons. Always remember, if you don’t like it, that means it’s no good.
“We try to provide a balanced collection of materials representing a variety of viewpoints,” said Jennings of the Akron-Summit County system.” There are going to be things that some people feel are inappropriate. It goes with the territory.”
Something to offend everyone
The Friends group of one of the local public libraries puts out a t-shirt with the saying, “My library has something to offend everyone.”
As any good public library should, and any reputable academic library almost must!

Way back before the internet, when we had Fidonet and cyberspace was still civilized instead of merely inhabited, we could append taglines to our messages. Something similar to the signatures of today but more refined and you could pick and choose something suitable to put the polish to a message. Best tagline I ever came across was: Save the easily offended: ban everything.
