Another one of those punny headlines: Library officials making noise on how some of us librarians are opposed to a provision contained in the Patriot Act that gives authorities greater access to records of what people check out from libraries or buy from bookstores.

“In this country, there’s a long tradition that freedom of speech has a corollary right to it. That right is to have privacy in your intellectual pursuits. In other words, it’s no one’s business what an individual reads or which Web sites he or she visits, as long as they are not accused of a crime,” said Egan. “It’s a pretty important standard for any free society to maintain.”
