Library denies censor charges

More Library News From Georgia, where lawyers for the publisher of a newspaper dealing with gay issues told a federal appeals court Friday the Vidalia Public Library is practicing censorship against The Gay Guardian, a bimonthly publication based in southeast Georgia.

Cathy Harris Helms, representing the Ohoopee Regional Library System, said the table’s original purpose was to display information about the library’s summer reading program and other library initiatives.

    Oh, it’s censorship all right
    He was given permission to place his papers on the display table and the librarian ordered them removed after receiving complaints while still allowing other publications to remain. This libarian appears to be operating in a deep state of denial. There can be no doubt that the paper was targeted because of its wrong-wing, morally disordered and intrinsically evil, tolerant content.

    Not without a whole lot of evidence to the contrary, at any rate.

    Well, actually they only removed the non-governmental material from table. That means there must have been other stuff that was removed. If they had only removed the Gay Guardian, then the case could be made for censorship. I don’t recall anyhting in the article saying they have begun putting other material back out, so it sounds like they are re-evaluating the policy.

    They can’t be all bad. They did initially allow the paper to be distributed, and I doubt there was much misunderstanding about the subject matter. The Gay Guardian? Thats about really happy Police Officers, right?

    Or they could be homophobic ass-holes. I’ll need some more information. It will be intersesting to hear the jury’s take on this.
