Libraries Restrict Access to Articles Naming Minors

Anonymous Patron writes MSN-Mainichi Daily News: Public libraries have restricted access to controversial articles in newspapers and weekly magazines that identified a 19-year-old boy who hanged himself after allegedly murdering a female classmate.

The media in Japan doesn’t normally mention the names of minors who commit crimes under the Juvenile Law, in an apparent attempt to help their rehabilitation by protecting their identity.

But the latest issue of Shukan Shincho magazine that hit the shelves on Sept. 7 mentioned his name and carried his photograph.”
