“In less than three years, DVD collections in BCCLS libraries are at levels that took more than 10 years to achieve with VHS,” said Robert White, executive director of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System, which includes all 62 Bergen County libraries and 11 in Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties.
The rapidly rising popularity of DVDs, and corresponding decline of videotapes, at libraries is a natural result of DVDs eclipsing VHS as the format of choice for movie renters. DVDs now dominate rental store shelves, and a quality DVD player can be purchased for under $100, something not possible four years ago.”

Our regional library now has 500 dvds. Yes, exactly 500 as of lunchtime today!
I love that they have dvds and they often have the slightly less known stuff as well as popular stuff. They also get seasons of tv series in as well. The library had H:LOTS first & second season, I requested and watched those and suggested the third season as a purchase. They went ahead and ordered all the seasons available. They’ve bought most of the dvds I’ve suggested for purchase. I check the online catalogue often for new dvds–and while they don’t have a new section on the website, it’s pretty easy to search dvds out in the catalogue.
Still, I request more books than dvds. And I’ve got a couple tv series I want to request but I need to add a note for them not to be sent until after June 24.
It’s a one week rental, 25 cents for every day it’s overdue (and they only charge you for days the branch you borrowed it from was open; small towns limited hours). You can’t beat that deal!

Do you really mean “Renting”?
Around here, the libraries have DVDs lend them, but there’s no charge, which is what I think of when you say “rent”.
I work in an academic library, and we have some group study rooms available that people can book. I always find it amusing when somebody asks if we “rent rooms”.
Why, yes, we do. By the hour even!

is quoted in that article – we cannot keep the DVD’s on the shelves!!!! ( we also do not charge to take them out ).

Yikes! The kids I work with are affecting me. They’re always asking to rent the books…
I did, indeed, mean one week loan, not rental. Of course, I’m chronically late returning things (bad library tech, bad!)so I usually end up paying a couple days late fees. So it’s almost a rental. 😉
