Librarian of Congress to help rebuild Iraq’s national library

“Rebuilding Iraq’s national library and education system could make anti-American groups less appealing to young people in that country, the librarian of Congress said in a commencement speech at St. Norbert College Saturday.”

“It’s the centrality of education as an antidote to the kind of education in terrorism you’ve got in radical Islamic areas,” James H. Billington said. “What you have now … is a system where young children are being doctrinated with a Jihad mentality.”

“Building a library is only a small part of the big need, which is deciding on an educational system and culture which represents the best of the culture, not theworst.”

“Billington, the nation’s 13th librarian of Congress, also received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the college.”

“As head of the Library of Congress, Billington, 73, was asked to help rebuild the Iraqi National Library following the U.S.-led war there.” (from AP)
