Rockford (IL) Dawn DiVenti is headed for the 100-year-old Hobo Festival in Iowa and hopes to be selected as the Hobo Queen, a title she thinks she has a good shot at.
DiVenti expects to face three challengers in a title to be won on the weight of a two-minute speech and judged by audience applause. Her mother, brother and sister will be there cheering. So will her boss, public library Deputy Director Judy Long.
. DiVenti, a hobo hobbyist, has been attending the festival since 2001, and recently hopped her first freight train. She also teaches hobo history and plays traditional hobo music. More from the Rockford (IL) Register
I’ve met Dawn and still find her alternate life hard to imagine, as she is very petite and well-dressed!–rochelle
Shunning streetpeople homeless the lessenfrachised
Quite a contrast to the kind of shunning that goes on in our cities’ public libraries. Too often we hear at Boston Public Library, “Oh, that’s one of our regulars.” This said instead of going to the person and respectfully addressing the man or woman with a greeting, being welcoming and truly willing. Street people, homeless or the less enfranchised have been left to wander the periphery of our cities’ public libraries because of the lack of training, lack of supervisory programming and continuing staff development around such concerns. There are those with talent, skill and expertise but most see a threat, retreat or act in some dismissive manner consequently denying public library service robustly.

yeah, one time I visitng the BPL and there was this guy outside with long shaggy hair and beard, arms raised up in the air walking up and down the side walk muttering at himself, occasionally even yelling. Next time I see him I’ll be sure to ask if he’d be interested in the latest Grisham novel.
