The Edmonton Journal’s Steve Makris asks if we are doomed to constantly back up our digital data to other media with the same short life span? The short answer, he says, is yes.

Experts agree the best way to save one’s digital files is to make two sets of duplicates on magnetic tape of CD/DVD and store in separate locations in dry and cool environments.

Check frequently to make sure the data is readable and repeat the process every five years.”
