Lbrarian who canceled N.Y. Times will retire

Anonymous Patron writes “MySA.com Reports Mendell D. Morgan Jr., dean of library services at University of the Incarnate Word and the man whose decision to cancel, and then reinstate, the library’s New York Times print subscription garnered headlines, is retiring.
Morgan said Friday that he would retire after 31 years at the university to care for ailing family members. Before leaving, he plans to work reduced hours for the next couple of years to help with the transition and new initiatives at the library.”

    What kind of transition are they expecting will take years? I do not see that in the article so I am guessing it was a mistake by the submitter.

    I’m surprised the usual suspects haven’t gathered around to inform us that he isn’t really retiring, he was forced out by the pro-Castro/pro-abortion/anti-Christian/anti-Americ an/lefty/liberal/secularhumanist conspiracy that is coordinated by the secret cabal within the A.L.A that receives direct instructions from the Havana/Damascus/San Francisco Axis…but the day is young.

    While in library school, I noticed that many people really believe that the NYT is the “newspaper of record”, so all the fuss over this affair is unsurprising. For anyone who believes every word in the NYT, I want to point out that it essentially ignored the extended electrical outage in western Queens for the first several days. 100,000 persons were without power in 90+ degree weather, less than 5 miles from the Times’ press room, but they had the misfortune to be neither affluent or poor and so weren’t newsworthy. The tabloids were required reading for anyone who wanted to be truly informed about the situation. Ok, let the snide comments begin…

    I noticed that too. My office in Manhattan is @ 300 Madison across from the Library Hotel (how fitting) and the tabloids had nifty stories front page but the NYT didn’t even cover it inside – at least from what I read. If I recall it was the Post that I read the electric company was giving a $3 refund to affected customers. I don’t buy the NYT but I’ll read it if it is laying around. Heck I read cereal boxes too.

    The newspaper of record thing is just people being clueless. Even the beloved Wikipedia has what I consider a wrong definition of newspaper of record. The term means nothing about the quality of the journalism (or in this case the lack thereof) but the publication of legal notices. In my county in Florida there is a newspaper of record that almost no one reads, but the Clerk of the Court has approved it for publication of legal notices. Lawyers and businessmen read it, but I’ve never seen anyone at a lunch counter reading it. No sports, no comics. Just business and legal news, and lots of legal notices. I did subscribe for a while when they were running a special but it was frankly boring. If I want to know who is having their home sold at public auction I go to the library and read it, otherwise I may drop fifty cents in the box once or twice a year to get it.

    The NYT is a rag, but then again it beats USA Today which I think is the pablum of the daily broadsheet world.

    N.B. I like the Post when I am in NY. If someone is found headless, it is always in the Post.
