Just one library, but it is named after two women…Laura Bush, and her mother Jenna Welch.
The Jenna Welch-Laura Bush Community Library, 6701 S. Desert Blvd., was named to honor the first lady and her mother in May. Carol Brey-Casiano, director of the El Paso Public Library System, and immediate past president of the American Library Association, said the name was a natural. More from my west Texas .
Bush Chair promotes Wife for Honor
“The project was introduced through the efforts of Adair Margo, an El Pasoan who chaired the city’s Bush presidential campaign.”
So, campaign chairs can name libraries? Is this the Reagan Legacy Project round 2?
Oh my God
Someone named a library after a woman who instilled a love of reading in her daughter, and a librarian who advocates for libraries.
Oh, no! someone with the same political philosophy as the honoree suggested the idea!
People might to go this library and learn to read, even people who don’t speak English as they have an ESOL program.
It is just too horrible to imagine. Since I can’t say anything nice like my mother taught me, I am going to cast aspersions.
Re:Oh my God
Perhaps you can identify for us where kmcook said anything that even the the most rabid partisan could possibly rationally interpret as an attack on ESOL programs. Yeah, yeah, the article mentions–in passing, in a string of other library progams for babies, tots, and teens, and a science fair–an ESOL program at the library, and so obviously kmcook’s objection to the Bush campaign chair being behind this must, obviously, be grounded in racist hatred of that ESOL program.
Because, obviously, only racism can possibly explain political opposition to these rich white folks.

Yes, md, we know; it’s tactic number one in Chairman Rove’s Little Red Book.

AS a lifetime member of REFORMA and the 2002 Latina Librarian of the year I have much experience with the personal attacks and smears of people like Mr. O’Neil.
I was just pointing out that having the Chair of Mrs. Bush’s husband’s campaign committee promote the naming of the library reminded me of the Ronald Reagan legacy project.

Not only is that a racist staement, its classist as well. Good job.
Considering McCook has used the racist brush herself quite liberally the both of you might want to be careful about your glass houses.
Re:Thanks,Lis
If you have any pull with REFORMA perhaps you can find out why they cashed my check but will not let me on the listserv even after I have sent them two copies of the cancelled check?

Re:Oh my God
Thanks for improperly parsing my words, but you completely lost the meaning with your verbal machinations. I am not sure why hyperbole is so hard for people to understand in the written form. (One hint, look at the overuse of exclamation marks!)
Who would suggest naming a library after someone they don’t like? The fact that the suggestion came from a supporter of President Bush should not be surprising. The campaign chair didn’t name the library, the Community College, the School Board, and El Paso Library System management named it.
The statement that “Campaign chairs can name libraries, is simply untruthful. Manipulating the facts to suit your opinion is easy, but don’t pretend that you can pass of your version of the facts on others with out being called on it.
Re:Oh my God
Yes, but it’s one library named after two women. Personally, I have a strong tendency to condemn the U.S. right-wing for illustrating how it believes that a woman is worth only half a man. While I recognize intellectually that this is just conspiracy theory, it would be in keeping with the bigotry of religious extremism. In extremist-Islam, for instance, it takes the testimony of four women to counter the testimony of one man.
Looking forward to your thoughts

But of course. And because you and I both share a passion for literacy and education I’m certain you have some very constructive thoughts from your perpective as a Latina librarian to share about the The Jenna Welch-Laura Bush Community Library and how it will serve the Latino folks in Texas.
BTW, isn’t nice to see women, for a change, be given recognition?
