Largest-ever Collection of African-American Biographies

ivana writes “The African American National Biography project is to be published in several volumes and there will also be an online database with about 11,000 names of the living and the dead. In another departure from conventional biographies, nominations for inclusion can be made by anyone offering a name to help enrich the narrative about race in America. Here’s the registration-required NY Times article and here’s some PR from Oxford University Press. And here’s a call for contributors.”

    Use of reference sources way down?
    While I value resources like this, I’ve had to take a hard look at ordering multi-volume, big money reference sets because of how little use they get. I even have a hard time getting students to use authoritative subscription databases. Maybe if they were as easy to use and accessible as Google, they’d get more use. When students (of all ages), see those search screens with all the choices they have, I can see their eyes glaze over and know they’ll be on google as soon as I walk away.

    I’d love to get an updated version of the Grove music encyclopedia, but we’ve got enough dust collectors as is. It’s so sad to talk to vendors of reference material such as this. I always tell them to fax me the information, but tell them honestly that it’s very unlikely we’ll be making many purchases of such material. I’ll be looking at the electronic version of this one, though.
