Keeping Sex Books Creates Money Trouble in Idaho

Anonymous Patron writes “KBCI 2 Boise, Idaho: They lost the first round, but a group of community members who want to remove several books from the Nampa public library aren’t giving up. Now some Treasure Valley business owners say it’s the library’s back pocket the could take a hit. Several local business owners say they’ve had enough and they’re taking a stand, planning to with hold donations that could help expand the public library.It’s a stand that comes after the library boards recent decision to keep what some argue are graphic images and descriptions of sex in reach of their kids.”

    You reap what you sow.

    For me, the Joy of Sex and the Joy of Gay Sex ain’t a hill worth dying on because anybody can get access to these books via other methods (they can buy it). Although the article only alludes to it but if this were really only an issue of children getting access to it, then they should just make it unavailable to kids. I remember when I lived in Portland and the public library wasted their money on that book of Madonna with naked pictures of her, they made it unavailable to kids by putting it on reserve throughout several branches (although the main library had closed stacks and you had to ask for it anyway).

    I’m not saying this is happening in this situation but if you piss off too many people then people lose interest in public libraries.

    Sorry for the Godwin, but…
    Let’s try a reverse conditional gift…. they say they will only donate money if the library picks Mein Kampf as it’s Book of the Month club selection.

    At what point does it become okay for a library to accept bribes? Most places seem to stop at naming rights, but even little things like those “Jesus bricks” can raise hackles.

    Actually, this article about it says that they decided to put the books on a shelf that has to be accessed with a ladder. Also, that one of the people who brought the complaint has checked out “The Joy of Gay Sex” and has no plans to return it.
