Internet Blamed for Church Arson by Juveniles

Four teen boys were arrested and charged with arson in connection with a series of church fires in February and March in Johnson County (KY). Specifically, they were charged with “second-degree arson in connection with the fires, and criminal mischief and third-degree burglary.” The FBI is investigating whether they can be charged with hate crimes, since spray-painted satanic symbols were found at the sites. Least you think these boys are bad seeds, one of the boys’ attorneys had this to say: “One or both parents of each child is a Christian. The only common threat between them is that they spent lots of time on the Internet and had computer linkups between their computers.” More here from the Kentucky Herald Leader.

    responsibility
    Doesn’t seem to matter what generation it is, there is always something to blame. “Reading that book made me do it”, “Listening to that music made me do it”, “Surfing the internet made me do it”.

    Ya know what–the only responsibility is with those who did the crime. Books, and music, and the internet may have influenced them but it didn’t make them do it. What? The Internet was there holding a gun to their heads to set those fires? I don’t think so, anymore than a book or music could.

    I think it’s too easy to avoid taking responsibility for one’s actions these days. If these kids did indeed do this (I’ll go with the innocnet til proven guilty theory right now) then they need to accept thier responsibility in it and accept their punishment.

    We all have things that influence us in positive or negative ways, but when it comes down to it, we have free will which means we oour actions. In choosing a course of action, be it negative or positive, we have to accept responsibility for our actions.

    But then, what do I know, I’m just a Library Tech…
