Inconvenience does not equal censorship

Anonymous Patron writes “An Opinion Piece From The Times Union states COPA’s detractors may comfort themselves with the notion that they are heroic defenders of the First Amendment, children — a child of any age who can operate a computer mouse — are being exposed to the vilest type of pornography imaginable by the click of a button on a computer.”

    Along with your “censorship-happy twits” there are also pedophiles and perversions of every stripe. Should the children be subjected to all of them at a tax-payer supported institution – or should those parents who care about such things just keep their children at home?

    The article was thoughtful and sensible in tone, but because it was written by someone who holds an opinion different from yours, you seem to think it fine to call her a “censor-happy twit.” If we cannot maintain a higher level of discourse and refrain from such name-calling, we will make little progress toward better understanding. I thought librarians could refrain from mud slinging. Can we do better next time?

    Way to go… yes, kids should NOT view everything
    …regardless of what the ALA (and many librarians) say!!

    At the COPA cabana
    The writer of the opinion piece sez: “One side wants to prevent this scenario: A 5-year-old visits a friend’s house and while surfing the Internet, the two children come across graphic depictions of sexual activity.”

    The writer may not be a twit, but she’s certainly a weasel. Not only does COPA cover more than “graphic depictions of sexual activity,” but it also puts 16-year-olds at the same level of maturity as the hypothetical kindergartener who visit a friend when the friend’s parents apparently aren’t home. And it would pretty much force the sensibilities of the most restrictive community to be applied nationwide. So, if you have an ad-supported site that includes a few nude drawings from manga, it looks like you’re going to have to keep out the San Francisco teenagers or risk having a grade-schooler’s mom in rural Iowa calling the Feds on you.

    Maybe that’s not unconstitutional, but it’s pretty screwed up.
