If students want to ban the Bible, will it be a book bonfire next?

Anonymous Patron writes “Scotsman.com News has an Opinion piece that follows up on the Bible story from the other day. Paul Riddel says it is deeply disturbing that students in a place of learning are attempting to ban a book. They’ll be wanting to burn them next. “[H]e who destroys a good book, kills reason itself,” said Milton in Areopagitica.”

    There’s a Difference…
    …between banning a book and simply not providing it to every dormitory student. This Scottish university doesn’t want to take the bible out of their library, they simply want to eliminate its inclusion in every dorm room. Since I have NEVER heard of any public university providing new students with a copy of the bible, this decision by the student body seems rational and kind– especially considering most students are probably just using it for a beer coaster anyway. College should be BYOB– bring your own bible, if you want.

    I’m on board with Anonymous Patron–this is an invented story of censorship. If in the interest of fairness you wanted to include the scriptures of multiple faiths, where do you stop? The Bible (Catholic and Protestant), the Qu’ran, the Torah, the Talmud, the Bhagavad Gita, the Analects, the Kojiki, the Guru Granth Sahib–every dorm room will end up with a small library.

    Better to have no provided scriptures in dorm rooms and place them in the libraries and central reading rooms.
