Richard Gere is starring in a movie called The Hoax.
Based on a true story: The writer Clifford Irving nearly pulled off one of the most audacious media scams in history, when his “autobiography” of Howard Hughes was published. Irving claimed the book was based on in-person interviews with the reclusive billionaire, which were in fact completely bogus.
In real life Irving served 14 months in jail. He wrote a book about the incident. The paperback reprint in called The Hoax. There UK printing of the book came first and was called Project Octavio.
