search-engines-web writes with an with an article on the understaffed Hawaii public libraries:
There is a shortage of would-be librarians, and the profession is graying, with more than half of the state’s librarians eligible to retire in the next five or six years, Fujio said. The tight labor market has also slowed recruiting, with the state’s unemployment rate the lowest in the country.
The shortage of librarians willing to work for the offered pay was covered earlier this year. (And before backing your bags, be aware that your pets may be subject to a 120-day quarantine confinement — although some exceptions do exist.)
Is it any wonder??
Is it any wonder that there is a shortage of staff in Hawaii’s public libraries? The cost of living in Hawaii is extremely high and I dare say the salaries offered to librarians in Hawaii are not enough to allow them a decent lifestyle and well, if you have dependents, forget it. Heck, I heard a box of FRosted Flakes is six dollars or something ridiculous like that. You’ll be sleeping on the beach! I looked at library media specialist jobs in Hawaii because there is also a shortage of those and I think the starting pay was in the high 30s. NOt bad elsewhere, but this probably doesn’t go far in Hawaii.
Just my two cents…
Re:Is it any wonder??
That and you have to live there to apply. If I wanted to move to Hawaii to be a librarian I sure would like to be guaranteed a position before I packed up and paddled over. No chance of that though as their regulations require me to be resident in Hawaii before I apply.
My pets aren’t allowed at all
Well, most of them, anyway, I don’t think. Last I checked, the island, fearing going the way of Guam (can you blame them?) doesn’t allow reptiles of any kind.
At least I think it’s Guam… my head’s a little fuzzy. The little snakes that ate all the birds island.
