slashgirl writes “‘Work is set to begin on a $140-million theme park that will bring to life the 19th century world of Charles Dickens. Scheduled to open in April 2007, Dickens World is being spearheaded by the South East England Development Agency, a group in charge of redeveloping the area. The attraction will be located at the agency’s Chatham Maritime Site – a former dockyard – in the southeast region of Chatham, where Dickens spent his childhood.’
I wonder if we need a category here called “Authors Rolling Over in the Grave”. What’s next, Harry Potter world? Read more here.“
relativity
I suppose the money isn’t as much as I first thought when compared to other major theme parks, otherwise I would have said it wouldn’t work.
There are a number of travel-back-in-time parks that I assume are successful since they are still going. Plimoth Plantation is here in Massachusetts and there’s a place called King’s Landing up in Canada where schools would go on all day field trips.
Personally I hate places like this and will gladly take up arms to fight for the right of indoor plumbing and heating, but I guess some people like it.
The irony…
So, we take an author who wrote to de-romantisize the plight of the (Victorian) poor, and we use his works to build a theme-park that will romantisize the plight of the (Victorian) poor?
Next will we have a George Orwell 1984 theme park that shows how *cool* it would be under a totaltarian regime with thought police?
