Google and Wikipedia–banned in a classroom

As relayed by both The Kept up Academic Librarian and Phil Bradley’s Weblog a lecturer in England has banned her students from using both Google and Wikipedia. She states:
“She believes that easy access to information has dulled students’ sense of curiosity and is stifling debate. She claims that many undergraduates arrive at university unable to discriminate between anecdotal and unsubstantiated material posted on the internet.”

To which I say why not teach them how to find the right information? She goes on to state that she gives them excerpts which doesn’t seem to help them either.

UPDATE: This story has been picked up by others as well including Download Squad. It’s interesting that their seems to be similar thought all around…a bad idea that doesn’t teach much.
