Giving Consideration to Veterans

Navy Veteran and librarian Michael McGrorty gives librarians, and everyone else, good reasons to consider the contributions of veterans of the US military.

Society takes note of veterans every eleventh of November as it does of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day—with the occasional speech, perhaps a toast or two, and then the world passes on to other things. Veterans are relegated to the special category which permits us to attend to them on a regular schedule, then forget them for another 364 days. The patchwork of veteran’s preference regulations reflects the lack of seriousness with which we view the subject, or rather, the subject class.
