Friday Updates For April 7th

It’s hard to believe it’s Friday again, yet here we are…

I’ll start the update this week with Make Your Own (legit) READ Poster & Win $100: One phoned in from the ALA to let folks know about their pricey way to make your own “real” READ posters. Commentors were shocked at the price. “Libraries are evil” says author” was one of the more interesting stories of the week. Author Anthony Doerr first said “libraries are evil” for eating into his revenues, then said “just kidding.” While we’ve all heard this excuse before, this time I am inclined to believe him. He might be a good author, he’s just not a good satirist.

It didn’t get any comments, but I recommend you check out Information is -not- Knowledge. I keep reading how “the world is flat”, it’s nice to see it’s round again. Some interesting comments and questions raised on Librarian Saves a Life At Orem UT Library. Does the right to privacy trump everything else?

TWiL was a bit late this week, but as usual it was worth the wait. Transgendered Veteran’s Suit Against Library of Congress Can Proceed raised a bit of a ruckus, and some really nasty comments.
US News & World Report LIS rankings are out again this year. How did your school do? Library Worker Who Criticized Admin Wins Grievance touched off a little discussion on the value of unions. You probably won’t be surprised by the comments.

And last, but not least, the most important story of the week, maybe of the entire year Must-Read Post on Information Overload

In the journals, slashgirl reached out for help with her portfolio, ShockM pointed to an interesting post on the new OPAC at a public library, and GregS* pointed to his library’s TV broadcast.
