Florida incident fuels library filter debate

An Article Out of FL says an Internet chat room, accessed by a teenager via a Williston Public Library computer, became the means for the boy to talk with an Ocala man later charged with molesting him.

Now Williston Police Chief Daniel Davis is questioning whether the library should have provided the unfettered access to the chat room in the first place.

“Their position is that these are freedom of speech rights, and they don’t feel that they can provide any constraints,” Davis said. “I think these constitutional issues are going to have to be addressed very high up. There’s got to be some test case. I view it as really a public policy concern. Here they just require the kids or anybody to have a first name sign-up and then you can use the computer.”
