F.C.C. Takes a Close Look at the Unwired

A new study shows that nearly one-third of Americans do not have high-speed access to the Internet, and cost is one of the biggest obstacles.

    High speed Internet
    I know several people that do not have high speed Internet but could afford it if they really wanted it.

    The Communications Act of 1934, as amended, does have limits
    The up to date Communications Act does have some limits to it. The FCC does not have unlimited jurisdiction and requires statutory enactments from time to time to handle new technologies. All these inquiries are nice and all but the end results are things the Commission really lacks the authority to do anything about. No agency really has responsibility for Internet access overall as even the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act split authority over broadband grants between the Federal Communications Commission, the National Telecommunications & Information Administration within the Commerce Department, and the Secretary of Agriculture.

    Unfortunately…the Google Books mess shows us how lawsuits are where this may all wind up in the end…

      May the FSM protect us from an FCC with unlimited authority
      Given the FCC’s actions with regard to the analog hole (or Broadcast Flag) and “decency,” the last thing we need is for the FCC to have broader authority. It would, actually, be interesting to know what portion of that 40% just doesn’t much care about broadband…or have any reason to.
