Exhibit highlights ‘challenged’ books

“Some would like these books to just disappear. But not by magic, the result of incantations mumbled mysteriously over a boiling pot containing eye of newt.”

“That would just invite more toil and trouble, since magic itself is the reason why several young adult and children’s books have been challenged at various public and school libraries across the country.”

“In the Shadow of the Wizard: Literature Challenged: 1900-2000,” an exhibit of books that opened May 27 at the University of Delaware’s Morris Library Information Room on South College Avenue, features 20 books that have been “challenged” or whose removal has been requested from library shelves across the country. The exhibit will be up until Oct. 3, shortly after the end of Banned Books Week, Sept. 20-27. The nearly two dozen items in the four display cases have been challenged mainly because of their references to sorcery, spells and witchcraft. The display includes novels by Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien and Rudolfo Anaya.” (from The News Journal)
