Everyone’s Encyclopedia

Mr Enc writes “Wikipedia continues to get some Good Press, this time from The San Diego Union-Tribune. the communal encyclopedia published its 400,000th article in November, roughly four times the number of articles covered by Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Some say the Wikipedia information is suspect because self-appointed editors can easily add unverified or false information. The trade-off is that more reputable reference materials aren’t free.”

    Well, that’s one of the benefits of wiki. But there’s also the benefit that things happen faster. The Wikipedia is a splendid place to learn background information which led up to a major world event. I found it invaluable when the government changed most recently in Haiti. Of course in general you’d rather have information correct an immediate, but there are times when immediate is appropriate (as long as grain of salt is added liberally).

    I also really like reading the discussions that accompany controversial articles and the compromises that grow out of that. Adding transparency to that aspect of the editorial process is very helpful to me as a reader.
