The Welcome to Emerald program provides masters’ degree-seeking (MLS) students with free access to the Emerald Fulltext database for use in their collection development course. Over 350 students are currently participating in the fall 2006 semester, with enrollments now open for spring 2007.

Based on research conducted by Emerald at Louisiana State University and the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota, and with collection development skills identified as a core competency for American Library Association (ALA) accreditation, the focus of the program is on developing evaluation, selection, and collection building skills for peer-reviewed literature.

As part of an overall strategy to support LIS education and the future of the library profession, Emerald is making this investment in North American ALA accredited MLS programs, and plans to expand the program throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia in coming years. Based in northern England, Emerald seeks to create a dynamic international forum for library students to interact with their peers around the world.

What it involves:

Free faculty and student access to Emerald Fulltext for the duration of their collection development course.

Classroom evaluation exercise models developed with the input of LIS educators to build evaluation and selection skills.

Student eligibility for the Emerald MLS Student Best Paper Award, including sponsored attendance at an ALA Annual Conference and the prospect of publication in the Emerald journal Collection Building.

Participation in a faculty and student electronic survey at the end of the course.

Opportunity for students to join the LIS student section of Emerald Library Link, an international community portal for library news, resources, and discussion.

How it works:

Faculty from ALA accredited LIS schools are invited to participate. Enrollment for spring 2007 semester courses is now underway.

Interested instructors and professors can visit the Welcome to Emerald Webpage to register and provide collection development, or similar, course offering and instructor contact details. A member of the Welcome to Emerald team will follow up shortly.
