Lee Hadden writes: \”Edward N. MacConomy, 85, who joined the Library of Congress in 1940 as a
messenger and retired in 1985 as chief of the National Referral Center, a
subdivision that refers inquiries to appropriate private organizations and
trade associations, died on Dec. 17th.

Dr. MacConomy, who had an abiding interest in politics, was the library\’s
point man on communism and other political \”isms\” while with its
Congressional Research Service in the 1950s.

In that job, he handled requests from Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.)
for files about U.S. citizens he suspected of being communist sympathizers.

Dr. MacConomy\’s wife said there was a great deal of political and time
pressure involved in those requests, and the long hours at work caused her
husband\’s feet to swell to the point where he could not wear his shoes.

From 1961 to 1963, he taught political science and was a librarian at
Albion College in Michigan.
